I think it depends on a lot of factors. How was/is the car before the damage? Do you know/have the maintenance history? Do you like the car? Blue book, which can be useful or useless, gives you a range of $4k to almost $6k for the car, so $4k is the upper limit to pay for the repairs to be able to break even. I spent over $800 on recent brake and exhaust repairs on my '97 the car is probably worth $1500 at best because of the mileage but I didn't hesitate because the car looks good, runs good and I like it. I think if you part it out it can be a pain or junking it for cheap is a waste. If you get another it could have problems waiting to happen or problems that you may have already corrected on the other car. I'd be inclined to fix it if I liked the car, maybe because I hate throwing things away.
