I was right (hopefully). I rechecked the vacuum lines that I replaced and found that I had connected the new PCV value incorrectly. The small valve did not have any external indication of the direction. The valve was alowing air passage in the direction of the crank case. Reverse the direction, cleared the code and test drove it for 20 miles or so without the check engine light coming on. We will see if it stays that way.
Lesson: vacuum lines do do something.
