Thanks for the input, everyone. I'm convinced it's the thermostat. Today I parked the car for a short time after a 20 minute drive. When I came back, the temp was midrange. About 30 seconds after starting to drive, the needle dropped over halfway to Cold. Then I turned the heat on and it went almost to the stop. Definitely sounds like excess cooling capacity - a thermostat stuck open. At least it didn't stick closed and overheat.
How long do I have to get this fixed? It won't hurt anything if I drive until the weekend or next week sometime, right?
Now for the stupid question - How do I get the coolant out of the car without making a huge mess? I understand the principle of siphoning (fluid in the high container flows to the lower container), but how do you actually do it? Is a little hand pump needed, or what?
