You will likely not have success with Saab replacing your engine. I fought a long and hard battle with them--even paying the $850 diagnostic to find sludge--the only problem they will admit the cars are susceptible to--only because like idiots they recommended oil changes every 10k miles rather than the more reasonable 3 or 5k. SO--no sludge, no engine replacement.
What I discoverd happened to my engine was that at one time it had overheated (before I owned it) and had two blown head gaskets over the 3rd and 4th cylinders, precisely the ones that failed on me. Like you, I was on the far left lane of a 6-lane interstate and luckily had enough momentum and driving skills to get the dead car off the highway.
I even played private eye, found every owner of the car and obtained EVERY maintenance record. Expensive lesson learned--never buy a car, particularly a Saab if there has ever been a blown head gasket, and Saabs are prone to this problem as well.
I had a local saab specialist rebuild an engine for me, so I am back to enjoying my favorite car ever. Spent $5k but that is cheaper than the $7k the dealership wanted for a new engine.
Good luck--but again, I would not hold my breath waiting for saab to assist you.
