About a year ago I sold my 1999 9-3 with around 150,000 miles. A few months before selling it, the fuel pump died. It died suddenly, and seeing that I had a full takn of gas I opted for the 'cut through the rear seat' replacement.
The car I replaced the 1999 9-3 with was a 2000 Viggen with around 60,000 miles on it, currently it has about 80,000 miles. Last weekend, I make a quick stop at the grocery store, came back out and the car would not start on the first crank. Second crank nothing. The symptoms seemed like a dead fuel pump again. So, on for the third try, I turned the key without cranking the engine to listen for the fuel pump. It sounded like it was working, and sure enough when I turned the key it started right up. Keep in mind, the car was warm the entire time.
Last night on the drive home from work, in second gear while accelerating, the car 'bucked'. It was as if the fuel had been cut to the engine instaneously. I let off the gas, but everything seemed fine. No warning lights or anything. The car drove normally the remainder of the way home.
Again, this morning while pretty much coasting on the highway, the engine had the same type of hiccup. It was not nearly as violent, but I imagine that is because I was not accelerating.
Anyhow, these symptoms seem to lead toward a quickly dying fuel pump. Could it be anything else? Is 80,000 miles early for a fuel pump to go, or is it the fact that the car is 8 years old? If I could get some reassurance that this is most likely the fuel pump, I will drive the gas tank to near empty, so I can replace the pump by dropping the tank. I do not want to cut through my Viggen's back seat.
Thanks for any input.
