So when you say "roll backwards," are you talking about a situation where it is in reverse gear, and it bangs to a stop while you are trying to go in reverse, or it won't "roll" backwards (trans in neutral)?
If it's when you're trying to move in reverse gear, have you tried just putting it in neutral or holding the clutch in, and pushing it backwards when this happens? If you can do it with the trans in neutral or clutch in (someone pushing you or you pushing with someone in the drivers seat to press the brake if necessary), it's probably NOT your parking brake and something going on in the tranny. Try both ways - tranny in neutral as well as clutch in.
If with trans in neutral or clutch in and it still can't move, it MIGHT be brake related. If it moves with clutch in but not with trans in neutral, you might have something serious going on in the trans (cracked gear, etc).
If you think it might be brake related, here's another thought. If one of the brake caliper bolts is broken or cracked and flexing, when the rotor is moving downstream of the broken bolt the caliper might ride ok and seem fine. When you go in reverse and the rotor is moving "against the grain," it shifts to caliper and, the front of the caliper bangs against the rotor and prevents further rotation. I would think it's extremely rare, but it happened to an old bimmer that I had years ago.
