Ok, I see.
Their description of "long block" is correct. A "short block" would be everything there without the head. A bare block is just that...
The core charge is because they are saying the block cannot be reconditioned/reused. What happens, depending on the shop, is like when you buy a reman alternator. The store has to send in your old one so they can rebuild that one. They charge you the core charge, and if you don't give them your old one, or as in this case with your block, the old one is in such a condition that it cannot be reconditioned, you lose the core charge. It still does not say whether the block is new or reconditioned used. If your block is truly unusable, then that price isn't TOO bad. Maybe others can chime in on a crated rebuilt to compare - or search the board as I'm sure someone must have paid for a rebuilt on here.
I'm not familiar with core prices on blocks. You can try calling a dealer to see what the price of a new block (only) would be if they sell it that way to begin with (while you're at it, you can ask the price of a new short block, long block, and full crate engine). The Saabsite shows short blocks at about 3K, of that, $450 is their refundable core charge.
It's USUALLY best to replace pistons as sets. Bearing failure would be the common mode failure in the case of lack of oil - can't quite tell from your description of the where the damage is, or if the extent quantifies the block as being "unusable." GENERALLY, the bearing gets damaged, but the bearings are replaced. From your description, the bearing was damaged badly enough that the crank or rod wobbled enough to eat into a section of the actual block?
Since the warranty is on the long block, that means the head is covered too - in other words they are probably not just slapping your old head on (at least as is). While you were there, did it look like they are a full machine shop? If not, they may be just getting a crated long block from another rebuilder and slapping on the new water pump, your old a/c, etc.
If that's the case, I would feel better about a long block from a pro rebuilder than one that those cheese heads worked on. For example, a crated rebuilt motor probably has ALL new pistons - not just two.
