Do you have any idea what general area the noise is coming from? You could be hearing a worn strut mount, in which case the noise would come from high on the far side of the car, a sticky stabilizer bar bushing would sound like it's coming from right under your feet, control arm bushings could also render this noise. It's hard to say, without actually hearing the noise, where it could be coming from, but generally noises like you've explained stem from bushings sticking to whatever moving part their insulating. Of course, Like Wayne mentioned, you may be hearing a worn mount as well. If you have an automatic transmission it's easy to look for this with a friend. Stand in front of the car with someone inside and watch how far the engine/transmission assembly rock as the transmission is shifted back and forth from drive to reverse and when a little torque is applied in each direction as well.
