I have done this I few times on my 94 NG900 and 00 9-3 over some 300k miles on these two cars combined. Today I had the car on ramps (routine oil change) and realized it had been about 75 k since I put Redline MTL in several years ago. So rather than doing the removal of drivers side front wheel, I thought I would give it a try while on the ramps. It was not any more difficult to do this way as the hardest plug to get out is always the drain plug which is up against the subframe no matter how you approach it.

Upper Plug

The upper plug was removed by a 24mm half inch drive socket with a 24" extension and a long half inch drive ratchet. I used a telescoping magnet (Craftsman)to lift out the plug and to set it back in the hole and set into the threads. I removed nothing else to do this. Everyone should have one of these in their tool kits.

Check Level Plug

I used a 8mm 3/8" drive hex socket with a 6" extension and a swivel head 3/8" drive ratchet. Using a flashlight I set the socket with attached extension in the plug and attached the ratchet. I did not remove the wheel or anything else. Even though I could not reach the plug with my fingers I was able to remove and reinstall it easily using the socket with the extension in place.

Drain Plug

Always the last one to attempt to remove. I used a long handled 8mm hex key with about 1/2" removed with a hacksaw for clearance. Rather than a cheater bar or pipe for leverage I set the hex securely in the hole held it in place and gave it a couple of taps with a 2 lb. rubber covered dead blow hammer. I also used gloves to protect my hands and safety glasses. It too came out easily with the aid of the dead blow hammer. This plug is easy to replace by fingers.

Topping off

Using a small funnel and clear tube inserted in the fill hole I did not spill a drop. At about 1.6 liters the oil began to spill from the level drain. Level plug put back in place and tightened, I added another .25 litre as the car is not level when on ramps and it will spill out of the level as the check level plug is at the rear of the transmission. I used 1.85 liters total. The capacity is 1.9, but you never get it all out.

My old Redline oil was now light brown in color after 75k. The plug had some small particles collected by its magnet, but less than half of what was there at 75k. The car now shifts better, like it did after the initial change to Redline several years ago.

Having an assortment of good quality tools is great.
