I can see it working in storage quite well.

But, spraying a thin coat of oil that will wash off in all the winter snow and wet and salt? I don't think it would last very long. In addition, the areas most prone to rust get the most "blasting" from the road, so the oil will wear off there first.

I can see the dirt making it last longer, but then what happens when you want to work on the car? All that dirt and oil? I usually try to clean that stuff OFF my car, not put it on.

You might as well use traditional "undercoat". However, most studies found that it did little to protect rust prone areas - the reason it fell out of favor.
