Your initial symptoms sound like what mine was doing when my DIC was going bad.
If your year is like mine (99), you can't really "listen" for the fuel pump as the pump does not continuously run just because you turn the ignition on. You have to jump a live fuse socket to the fuel pump fuse socket. That will bypass the relay and power the pump directly so you can listen for the buzzing. When you turn the ignition on to the start position, I believe their may be an initial power blip to the pump, but then the system waits for sensors to say the car has actually started and running before sending continuous power to the pump.
If you jump the fueld pump and you don't hear the buzz, you know it's the fuel pump. You can use a constant live fuse - I believe #4 is one of them. If I recall correctly, the power comes in from the bottom blade (use a meter to check), and the fuel pump fuse is #32 (if I recall correctly).
