Okay - here's the update:
Got it all taken apart and put together, went to start it up - nothing. Decided to slap a new battery in it (current battery was at least three years old and came with the car) - fired right up. No apparent leaks - got some smoke that deveoped after about 30 seconds. Shut it down - still saw no leaks but noticed fluid level had dropped and was bubbling - which I expected and assumed was the air coming out. Temp gauge never moved off L. Went through about five more of these start ups and smoke and finally must have added enough fluid to keep motor cool. Temp gauge never moved through any of the start - slight smoke - top cycles. Ran it for about 15 minutes with heater on and off, topped off - still no leaks.
Questions:
1. If leaks were going to show themselves, how long would it normally take? In other words, when can I declare "victory"?
2. Have I done any damage by seeing what I'll call smoke coming off the manifold? Never let it run more than five or ten seconds after I saw smoke and eventually, when the system appeared to be more or less charged with coolant it stopped.
3. What else should I be looking for?
