There is a plastic access cover just forward of the right wheel well, behind the fog light. Remove this, and you are staring right at the A/C compressor.
Unfortunately, the way to see what is really happening with the A/C system is to put a set of gauges on it. The only foolproof way to charge the system is by weight, which requires the proper equipment for charging the system. It's not good (or legal) to dump freon into the atmosphere, either.
The green stuff mentioned in an earlier post is not freon, it is lubricating oil with UV dye in it.
There are so many ways to do this wrong, and many of them can be dangerous, too.
Your system should be evacuated and recharged properly, and then checked over for operation and leaks. I managed to find a used A/C machine for $75, got some books, and now I can service my cars properly (and quickly).
Finally, if you have a failing compressor (mine went at 135K) it will fill the A/C system with powdered compressor bits, which will clog passages in the condensor, the expansion valve, and possibly evaporator.
I had to buy a new compressor ($400) and 2 gallons of A/C flush, and spent about 5 hours flushing out the system. Fortunately, I caught it before the compressor failed - it was just worn. Otherwise, I would have had to replace the condensor, too. But now it works fine.
Bottom line - do the job right (or have it done) and you'll save lots of time and frustration!
