A/C bearing failure?

Hello,
On the way home from school last night the a/c compressor sounded like it was running in a dry bushing, making a scraping noise.
The next morning I removed the serpentine belt and rolled all the pulleys and ran the engine for a minute with no belt to hear if the engine was making noise (which it was NOT the source of the scraping noise, TG).
The compressor pulley has great resistance to free rolling and found that when the A/C is NOT engaged, the scraping noise reoccurs.
When the A/C clutch is engaged, the noise goes away.
A/C works well otherwise. It just sound really bad and loud without the compressor clutch engaged, like an engines main bearings are readied to let go.
Could it be the clutch bearing at fault here?
Is this DIYable?
If so, directions or a link would be greatly appreciated, as I will run the A/C as long as I have this issue to minimize lockup and total destruction of my A/C compressor.
Lastly, is there anyplace to get a cleaner, short shifter for my 2002 9-3SE?
Thanks,
George M.
