I feel you'd put too much torque without knowing it. Better to use the screwdriver method (if you have that accessory) and if not, hold the ratchet from the very head and turn using only the force of your hand.
Make sure mating surface is clean and that there is nothing left of old broken drain plug. Careful not to break the new one.
