I think it may be caused by overheating (coolant level is low due to seepage- typically from either the head gasket due to incorrectly torqued head bolts, or gasket failure, or leaking heater core o rings). Om oin the middle of head gasket replacement on my wifes' '99 9-3 2.0l. The head gasket was in pretty good shape for 11 years, with little sign of impending gasket failure. Anders recommendes putting extra anaerobic sealant around the oil supply channel at bolt 8 befoe torquing down the head bolts. I took pictures of the whole procedure (not quite done). I'll see if Dmitri will post them to his site for reference.
