Steering wheel shaking at various speeds -- Torque Converter?

Hi,
My 2001 9-3 SE just hit 100k this past weekend. Unfortunately, about 300 miles ago I started getting a shuttering, shaking, wobbling feeling as I drove down the road. It occurred at varying speeds... I specifically remember aroun 60 mph. The steering wheel would shake.
I thought it was tire/alignment related... cause it just so happened that I hit a huge pot-hole and I was planning to get 2 new tires. Rotation and all.
After getting the 2 new tires, the wobbling was still there... it seemed worse. I got the tires re-balanced but the wobbling was still there. An experienced mechanic at the tire-shop said all is good with the tires, steering rods, CV joint, etc. He suggested it was the automatic transmission's "torque converter".
So, what does this really mean? Does the car require a new transmission or some lesser, non-invasive procedure.
Does anyone have any suggestions on resolving this issue? Is it costly? Any info is appreciated.
The car runs thru every gear fine... but I cannot live with this shaking.
Thanks in advance.
