It was the companion shaft (w tripod cup) that was worn, not the intermediate shaft (double-ended spined shaft)- my bad in getting the names mixed up. It was a few years ago I did the work, and IIRC, I do think you have to remove the support bracket to replace the bearing. It's a beast to remove due to the alternator. I "didn't" replace the tripod bearing; the companion shaft tripod cup had noticeable grooves where the tripod bearing had worn the tripod cup.
Yes, I went OEM for everything. I wouldn't recommend the cheap all-in-one replacement chinese axles, as I read someone suffered an axle failure (unheard of in OEM).
