You were right, the cylinder head bolt in the corner I had seen some coolant leak was totally loose (could turn it by hand so it may either have been loosening for quite a while as no work was done to the engine but a throttle body replacement 3 years ago... or could it have been forgotten on the original assembly line in 99?) and the one across was hardly tightened. So I re-torqued them all and will observe what happens for the next few days (my first small trip yesterday showed again a lack of coolant, but I wonder if it was not the heating circuit which called for some liquid as the heater came on the first time this year after all these small leaks).
Second trip was fine today, will go further tomorrow and hope for the best as I agree with you about trying to avoid a head-gasket replacement.
