You can get Mobil1 for under $5/qt at Costco when it's on sale (and it's very often on sale). That is not much more than regular oil these days. The days of getting a case of regular oil for $10 are gone, it's not very cheap anymore. Claims of leaking when switching to synthetic are old repeated stories IMO. I don't think it's really a concern. Synthetics are a much more stable product because they don't depend on as many modifiers to do their job, since they are engineered from the ground up to have certain properties. At short oil change intervals (like 3k), I'm not entirely convinced that regular oil is much worse.
That all being said, I would still just do synthetic. I think the higher cost is offset by peace of mind, and a better performing product.
