You definitely will know when they are going when you start hearing bad creeks when stopping and starting. Mine failed at 200K--i replaced all lower control arms with rubber bushings (in place). The noises went completely away about 95%, however found out that the gland nuts were screwed out from the top about 1/4 of inch causing the inner shock to move in the strut. The gland nut(s) are rusted and need to be heated up with a propane torch to tighten--hopefully. Nothing applied to loosen has worked.
