You may get by that way but it's hit or miss. Best is to get a vacuum pump, evacuate the system and put the proper amount of refrigerant and oil using a postal scale. The exact procedure is easily found, youtube is excellent. The temp/pressure chart is easy to find. I got the pump for a little over 100 but it's a 2-stage, you can one much cheaper, and the gauges for 45 and the scale for 20. I also got a dozen cans of Johnsen R134a on Amzn for 60. I have 3 vehicles and that's $5/can and would cover any mistakes I might make. It was my first time and I got the a/c working in a '93 Mazda on which the a/c had not worked for 14 years. Shop wanted $1000 and I did it for $350 total. As I said, you may get it working as many have but it's a good feeling to do it right. Good luck.
Update 2019: well, that was my first time. One thing I've learned is not to use a postal scale. It's best to get the correct amount in there by weight so I use a Mastercool refrigerant scale and a 30 lb tank of refrigerant. Lots of videos on this.
