The motors come out far easier from the top, but to get the transmission to let go easily and not interfere with the Motor removal, I'll take out the front pair of subframe bolts, and loosen the middle set, so the whole thing sags, or the full left side so the trans can be pulled free to the side, then the engine can come right out the top.
I've seen guys try to drop the whole subrame like a VW, but it's more hassle...
On that note I have a low mileage 2.3 that I'm going to remove the newer head from and install a 99 turbo head (BEEFIER, along with the cams) and put new timing on it - I'll take pics of the pistons tomorrow, and get compression #'s when done, as well as inspect the crank bearings (they should be great on it.) How much do you think your refurb will run?
