The key turning issue shouldn't be related to the battery. I believe everything involved with the shifter and reverse lockout is mechanical, not electrical.
Can you move the shifter at all with the clutch depressed? If the weight of the car is against the gears, it can be hard to move it. Usually moving/rocking the car back or forth can relieve that enough to get out of gear.
Was the shifting sloppy prior to the failure? Perhaps the shifter linkage was worn and fell apart while the car was in gear when you tried to shift. If you can get under the car, this should be fairly easy to check. There's a ball joint sort of thing that will be hanging loose if it did fall apart. Here's a URL with some pictures of the linkage

The no-start thing is harder to guess at if you can't turn the key. DI cassette definitely a possibility, esp if the last one installed was an aftermarket unit. I think you need to address the locked shifter thing first to get the key turning. Then you need to see if the car would turn over and not start, or if it won't even turn (which requires a charged battery first).
Tried to add a hyperlink to an old post re: key not turning, doesn't seem to work. Search the board for 'key won't turn' and 'can't turn key' there are some tips on releasing it.
