Glad to hear that's resolved.
Smoke from the engine bay *could* be fluid, probably oil, that has leaked down on to something hot like the exhaust. Since the car's been sitting a bit, perhaps more leaked and accumulated than when driven regularly to burn it off. Seems unrelated to the key, probably unrelated to the stalling. Oil pressure sensor is a fairly common leak that ends up on the exhaust.
As for the exhaust, could be a similar issue where oil is accumulated somewhere more than normal. White or gray smoke? Billowing out or puffs? Did it stop after a while or has it persisted after driving? Valve stem seals, turbo seals fail over time, maybe not as noticeable when driven regularly. Neither of those is necessarily a show stopper but they'll need addressed at some point. If the smoke is white, the head gasket is failing, that is a bigger problem.
Was there oil around the plugs when you pulled the DI cassette?
20 year old cars = a continuum of repairs.
