Just did mine ('96 900T). Symptoms were; chatter/shudder and the old "hissing" throw out/release bearing. What I found was the chatter was directly related to the "hissing". Apparently, Saab uses a throw out bearing that has a metal component. Over time rust forms, as on mine, and the bearing either hangs up on the shaft or develops excessive play. Either way, the release and engagement of the clutch is not smooth and this causes the springs on the clutch to bang, thus the chatter.
Other things to look for; excessive spotting of the flywheel might require minimal machining, you'll find some if you drive like me. Be careful to check shifter linkage alignment when installation is complete. Misalignment will be your problem if excessive resistance/notchiness is felt as you shift thru the gears. I had to realign but it was relatively easy. Lastly, remove the fuse box and give the cable a few extra pulls at the spring section, this helps with the adjustment. GOOD LUCK!!!!
