i actually combine use of the dimmer switch and black panel display at night when taking long trips on the highway or desolate back roads. at first i thought that everything should go black as well (as advertised) and was disapointed. but as i used it i came to like it and see the design logic behing it. the idea is that all control labels are still visible at all times so that you can hit any buton in one movement (remember this technology was derived from jet fighters were ever movement and second counts) i agree it's not particurarly useful to dim the SID, but hey it keeps me from watching the MPG sometimes- that can be distracting.
i do fing that thegauges do dim very efectively. just glance down directly in front and speedo is th only thing lit. helps when you need to make a 'sudden speed adjustment'- this is probably the only real world benifit i've seen. overall, i like it. dim the lights too, and give it a few hours.
