I can't understand why the black panel feature works the way it does either. It seems silly to dim most of your primary instruments but leave everything else fully illuminated. IMO, The dash lights are actually more distracting than the instrument lights because they are in your peripheral vision. In the old c900 there are 2 instrument dimmer switches. One controls the instrument cluster lights and the other switch controls all the other dash lights. I think this is actually a better arrangement than the black panel has it is currently implemented.
