It is always hard to judge a tire against one that is a few year old. As well as getting less tread, the rubber tread compound changes, gets hard.
So if you had fitted a new set of the original tires, they would feel great too.
New tires run smooth and quiet. It is the wear pattterns that develop under hard acceleration, perhaps wheel spin, hard braking and high speed that ultimately determine how a tire feels in the long run. And as the tire ages and hardens, it become more less supple, and out of roundness can become apparent that was not an issue when the tire was new.
But I have to agree, new tires that run right can transform your driving experience. I was in heaven after getting new tires this year.
