Stephen: Do yourself a favor and carefully inspect your serpentine belt. I just replaced my belt, a 98 NG900 with 40K. The belt had many cracks, some minor and a few extremely deep. The belt also had a small developing hole. My guess is that it could have gone any second.
From up top, you can view the grooves of the belt. Pay particular attention for cracks along the grooves. You can also do a complete inspection of the belt by removing the right roadwheel and the plastic cover behind the wheel. You will then have access to the crankshaft pulley. Turning the crankshaft pulley will allow you to inspect the entire belt.
Good luck.
