The ECU's are actually identical in terms of auto and manual, there's simply a jumper on the autos to tell it to use Automatic boost programs. So, it's in the realm of possibility because Saab built all the systems to be as 'accessory-independent' as possible. Plus, the cars have all the holes for the Sensonic system, too, which was the semimanual system not sold in the US. When they broke too often, Saab would just do a Sensonic to manual conversion, although 60% of the parts were already there.
I think it's the other zoot that makes it really expensive...
the clutch pedal assembly ($?? guess $300), string cable ($40) (or hijacked hydraulic unit from a 9-3), the gearbox ($1700), new clutch and seals ($400) probably a new console piece, shift knob, shaft, linkage & housing (at least $500), manual trans mount ($49) ignition lock guts probably minor wiring, mostly disconnections. And labor, much labor. Although, if you used reconditioned parts all around, got a good price for the parts you're losing, and a mechanic say yes, you might get out the door with less expense than you'd think (plus a major headache.) Theoretically speaking.
A Viggen is theoretically way more fun, too...
It would definitely be ludicrously expensive to go the other way, because a stick to slushbox conversion would cost gearbox plus transmission computer modules and major wiring.
