Clutch Bracket Assembly

My '96 900SE suddenly became very hard to shift over the weekend. I took the car to the local dealer, and he told me the clutch cable and clutch bracket assembly needed to be replaced. I had a new clutch cable installed one year and two weeks ago (the warranty expired at one year). What causes a clutch bracket assembly to go bad? My dealer told me that the assembly is what caused the cltuch cable to give out so soon. The bill is going to be just shy of $600.
Any comments or ideas would be gratefully appreciated.
