Your clutch cable may have broken, but the stress on the holding assembly may have said, enough. There is immense pressure on a "mechanical" clutch control which I think SAAB abandoned in the '98 model year. What I feel happened is the points of most stress in the cable anchorages, gave in, and eliminated full movement of the clutch release lever. The new, hydraulic disengagement, may or may not be "retro-fitted" to your car. Note: They wouldn't have changed the design unless there was a reason.....
