Changing oil every 3000 miles was the norm 30-40 years ago when the science of lubricating oils was still somewhat primitive AND engines were manufactured to much wider tolerances. As engine manufacture has improved to readily accept tighter tolerances AND the science of lubricating oils has advanced, you can go to longer intervals. 8-10k is not unreasonable for mainly highway driving. Less miles for more stop/start and/or dirty conditions.
