Are 17 x 8 Borbet rims too wide??

I've got a silver 97 900SE Talledega Coupe and I'm looking to upgrade the rims to 17 inchers. I've looked around and like two of the Borbets at Tirerack. Basically narrowed it down to either the Type E (modern 5 spoke), which is 17 x 8, or the Type S (split 6 spoke), which is 17 x 7.5 --- does that extra 1/2 inch make a big difference (do they poke out too far)? Anybody out there have experience with either of these rims?
Also, as far as tires... I'm leaning towards either the Bridgestone RE730 or the Dunlop SP Sport 9000. Recommendations?
Thanks,
Dave in NJ
