Almost all cars with feedback loop fuel controls shut off the fuel during deceleration. At that point the instantaneous fuel economy is infinite, but is usually displayed at whatever is the highest number the system can display. On the 9.3, there is no instantaneous display only the average. So it is not unusual to see high mpg figures under certain circumstances.
On my 9K, which does have a "real time" mpg display, going down a hill with my foot completely off the throttle, I will see 99 mpg. The moment I touch the pedal, the mpg drops. When cruising down the freeway, watching the display bounce around in the 30's, apply almost full throttle (not enough to get the slush box to kick down), the display will hit single digits as the system dumps lots of fuel to deal with the boost.
Just to clarify an earlier point, most modern engines shut off the fuel during deceleration. If you engage the clutch or the engine speed drops below some predetermined value, the fuel comes back in to prevent stalling.
A VW Corrado I owned had a distinct point at 1500 rpm where you could feel it kick back in. Sounds like things are quite normal in your car.
