I like the saab because it is unique (Body shape, key location, etc.)

The reality is that compared to the costs I have had with any other car I would consider it a lemon. However, saab owners seem to accept it and if you buy one you will too. Or, you will dump the car.

There is no way that I would think that your maintanence costs will be limited to the recommended service checks. It looks to me that right after the warranty runs out so does your luck. Also keep in mind that parts are about 3 times more expensive than their US parts.

Around 50-60 K all hell brakes loose.

My repairs in the last year 50-60K 97 900 S.

New Tires.
New Brake Pads
New Clutch
New Clutch cable
Repaireing the emergency brake
replaced all of the wiper check valves
adjusted the shift linkage.
New battery
New alternator
New serpentine belt
New idler pulley

Overall I estimate that this all cost me in excess of $3,000.

Oh ya and regular maintance (oil, filter, etc. etc.) On a saab this stuff is kind of chump change by comparision.

In addition, my air conditioner makes a noise. I suspect it is the evaporator, and I seem to have a slight reverse grind. I suspect fixing these two things could cost me up to another $3000. And all this for a car that in the s series is under powered. Keep in mind you can't really upgrade to a turbo. If you get an S series you will have to get used to getting beat off the line by any sorry high school kid with a heavy foot. (The low gears suck).

So what is good about a Saab?

1)You get practice writing large checks to repair shops.
2)They look cool.
3)You get to learn about auto repair or else you will go broke. Thank god for this board. The people on here are life savers.

Tim
