No argument here, John.

I think it is funny that you went through my list of repairs and characterized them as. . . well . . . normal.

The one that broke my back was the clutch that went for $1300 at the lowest cost indie here in STL.

My personal favorite was the idler pulley that went unannounced and sliced the serpentine belt. You are right the parts are relatively cheap (pulley $40; belt ?? I think like 20-30 bucks.) I put it on myself an easy afternoon job. The problem is that in this case it went when I was 100 miles from home over labor day weekend. The parts are cheap. However, that is not the point. For a lot of these parts you need to go to the dealer. My experience with dealer shops is that they have worse hours than doctors. In the end, I paid $250 to get towed home and was stranded until tuesday when the parts department returned from vacation.

I can go on and on.

In summary:

Times towed home:

VW(six years) = 0
Saab (9 months) = 3

All (except the clutch) for routine, DIY maintance.
