Idler Pulley - Don't delay when going bad!!!

Well the infamous idler pulley failure happened to me yesterday on Interstate 40 in Durham, N.C. The onboard computer first reported that he alternator wasn't supplying enough juice and the battery light came on. Then the steering wheel became hard to turn and then finally the engine temperature moved suprisingly fast into the red. I shut her down immediately and rolled to a stop on the side of the highway. I took a look under the hood to see what I could find. Sure enough the upper-idler pulley had melted into some grotesque shape and the auxillary belt was flapping in the wind. Some coolant or coolean-steam had overflowed the overflow resevoir and was dripping down the driver side of the engine compartment.
The pulley had been squeeking for about 6 days when it finally went. I had a scheduled visit with my mechanic for a sport-exhaust install in a few days so I decided to wait and get the pulley's fixed then. Bad idea. My advice to anyone with a pulley making noise is to get it fixed ASAP and save yourself a towing charge and the potential over-heat of the engine.
I'd also like to say that 'Swedish Imports' on Route 15/501 in Durham, N.C. did a spectacular job replacing both pulleys in under 2 hours for a measly $283 which included a towing charge of $50. I wasn't finished with my second cup of coffee when they were tossing me my keys...
