Before they go, they can make a bad bearing noise, which is a dull rattling/faint groan/rumble. I thought it was a loud vac leak at first, if that helps 'place' the noise. Then I opened the hood, it was easy to locate. This can go on for 15 days or 15 minutes, but it will always lead to the wheel melting when the bearing seizes.
They can squeak, too, but I think that might be the belt as the bearing begins to stick/unstick. If you have a squeal like a loose fan belt, it's imminent. If you've ever had a water pump seize or lost another accessory bearing, it's pretty much the same. The idler is just a bearing without an actual accessory attached.

PS, mine went at about 105,000 miles, on Christmas Day. They seem to choose winter to die, there's a spate of pulley problems every year starting November or so in North America.
