As I was taking off from a traffic light today, my '97 900 SETC died without warning. I was in the process of letting the clutch out after shifting into 2nd gear and the car shut down. At first I thought had stalled it, but after numerous tries to restart it, I found that it was something more. The starter engages and the engine cranks, but the car will not start. The dash components, SID, stereo, lights, remote locks and alarm all function just fine. No blown fuses and the battery is strong. Had the car towed home, so I can repair.
The car has 60K miles on it (I bought it with 46K miles in Jan, 2002). I replaced the plugs with new NGK BCPR7ES-11 at 52K miles. The electrodes on the NGKs I pulled out of the engine were worn badly (it looked like they may never have been changed). I've read numerous entries on this board about faulty DI cassettes (I read one that said running the plugs too long can shorten the life of the DI cassette. Can anyone else confirm this?).
Also, I had noted that when driving at night, the head lights and dash display would dim whenever the windows or sunroof were operated (not sure if this normal or is related to the current problem).
Could the experienced Saab owners like Dean, Anders, etc... provide a bit of insight for this problem? I do own the Haynes UK repair guide, but thought you folks might help shorten the troubleshooting process.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Paul
