With a synthetic oil, there are chemical addatives that can get used up. For some vehicles with low miles and lots of short trips and city stop and go, short drain intervals makes a lot of sense.
Yes, some are overdoing it.
In normal operation, there is engine wear, and the metal particles are so small that the full flow oil filters cannot remove these. As these accumulate, they act as catylists for oil oxidation and cause wear themselves. The only practical way to remove this material is to drain the oil. A bypass filter can remove much of these wear particles. Installing one of these in a NG900 is rather difficult as there is so little space to add something like this under the hood. If a bypass filter is used, then it can be renewed once a year, along with the full flow filter. On some vehicles, the oil needed when the filters are changed is enough to replentish the addatives. Folks who do this never need to drain the oil and they will tap off some oil for analysis to watch the chemistry and contaminates. But for a small engine the economics of all of this is quite questionable. However, I think that the benefits of a bypass filter for reduced engine wear makes a lot of sense. I would use a bypass and do a full drain every year and skip the expense and bother of oil analysis.
