'91 900 S (2.1L; manual; 208K mi.) and '98 900 convertible (2.3L; manual; 62K mi.).
Overall, I like the C900; wife prefers the NG900. C900 is firm and rock solid on the road, handling well at all speeds (and I drive fast...). The NG900 is softer and thus less solid at higher speeds and aggressive turns. Both have been very reliable. No non-maintenance costs with the NG900, and mostly maintenance items for the C900. NG900 has more power and gets slightly better mileage (28 vs. 25 mpg).
My impression is that the C900's have fewer unexpected (non-maintenance) costs, but their older age will result in more maintenance costs.
Transmissions are the C900 weakness, pre-90 manual before larger pinion bearing was used and all automatics. NG900 transmissions seem to be rock solid. C900 engines are bullet-proof. There are disturbing problems of 2.3L engine balance chains going out early ($$$$; oil issues).
I've followed the boards for a while. Some of the recurring issues:
NG900: clutch cable (pre-98), oil seals, idler pulley, early convertible top mechanism (not sure of years), DI cassette (turbo). C900 issues: head gasket (2.1L), heater control valve, steering rack and U-joint, main pulley (harmonic balancer), dash cracking (cosmetic), wiring harness ('85 model). Probably missed a few.
