It could be a matter of how many deposits/sludge existed in the engine at the time of changeover moreso than miles. I bought both of these cars with 40k or thereabouts on them but the prior records indicate oil changed every 3k in my 94, and every 5k (a dealer stamp) on the 00. Since I know they we regularly serviced at decent intervals, I will never know what type/brand of dino oil the service folks dumped in these two cars. This is one advantage to buying a new car - you know the total history. Used Saabs are such a bargain though, guess I can tolerate some leaks as I learn through hard knocks.
Come to think of it I have put 200k+ on my 1984, 1988, and 1999 900t'S (all RIP)using nothing but Castrol 10w30 dino oil since they were new. Only one of those cars (the 89) ever leaked and I never had any engine or turbo issues....maybe I should stick to the cheap stuff.
My 94 leaks at the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, rear seal. My 00 is leaking at the rear seal, a little black box by the alternator (some sort of CCV) and beginning to seep at the valve cover. If all cars leaked as much as mine, the roads would be a slippery place indeed and safe for no one. Tailgating would be a thing of the past.
