As I understand it:
Paint cleaner is a chemical strip/solvent that loosens oxidized paint and dirt. Good but harsh, not intended for regular use. Clay on the other hand is GREAT for picking up dirt/tiny tar flecks out of the paint - you won't believe the difference, the paint will be smoother than smooth. Used properly it is safe to use regularly; also pretty quick process.
I've only 'paint cleaned' the car every 2-3yrs. Just started claying last summer, but intend to do it before each coat of RaceGlaze (2-3x/yr). I get a lot of "It's how old?"
