I just had my car painted 6 months ago and had a wax only about 3 ago (same guy that painted- and some buff work on 'spots'). I could tell the wax was weak and went back to my Mequires 3-step (PIA- yes, but it works) stand by.
The cleaner striped the old wax off and the polish did exactly what it said- "dark, water like look." and then some wax.
I'm as anal as you seem to be- I did half the hood and drove around for three weeks and washed it couple of times. Then I brought my very opinionated wife for an inspection- asked her, "what looks different about this hood?" "This side looks better." My 3-step side that is.
I have ZERO experience with clay, but theis BB will open my eyes even more.
