I just did a pair of GB wheels for my '73 99 a few days ago. They were re-painted in 2002 with no clearcoat, but brake dust had blackened them some. I had reservations about using paint stripper on aluminum, but took a chance that it wouldn't harm the metal, and it worked out fine. I used Aircraft Remover < paint stripper, then used plenty of water to rinse the residue. I also chose to sandblast, since there was still paint remnants that didn't strip off < I used play sand. If your wheels have polished lips, then sandblasting may abrade the areas that you want to keep polished. You can still polish those areas after blasting, but it will take more elbow grease.
I'm not a big fan of spray cans, but chose to use them for cost reasons. If I had some left over silver paint and clear laying around, I would have used automotive paint instead of spray cans. The time it needs to cure and place back into service is less, and durability might be better. The directions on the Duplicolor spray cans mentioned at least a week dry time before placing back into service.....some pics linked
I would have taken a few more after paint and clear, but my daughter broke my camera on Sunday.....
