Everybody has great input.
Be sure the service you get has coverage where you will be using the phone. Not as simple as it sounds. Talk to friends with phones in your area to see what seems to work best. AT&T for example has big holes in the system, as does Sprint. Don't know about Cingular (not available where I am) but their plan is nice in that you retain unused minutes.
I have been on Verizon for almost 8 years and it is great. Decent rates, coverage almost everywhere. I'm about to switch to a plan where my wife and I share minutes and get free mobile to mobile time.
Motorola phones are great, so are most Nokia. I have an Audiovox that survived a swim in a river. Don't know about the ones from Samsung, VG, and Kyocera. And the free phones are probably fine.
Be sure to get a plan with free long distance. However, if you use the phone out of your home area, some plans will hit you with roaming charges if you are off their system. The only way I've found to avoid that is Verizon National One Rate, which has no roaming charges. The Verizon Family Share Plan is nice but has some holes in coverage where you will incur roaming charges. Just check their maps to see which will work.

Hope this helps.

And get some kind of hands-free kit for use in the car.

Noel
