Problem: static electricity with cloth seats

Ok, I give up. I need help.
Every time I get out of my car, I get a large shock when I touch the metal part of the door. I thought it might be caused by an electrical short, but I've elminated that possibility for two reasons: first, the voltage is far higher than anything a car sees (since it's flowing through me), and second, I've tested the theory as follows:
1) Stop car, park, remove key.
2) Open door
3) Reach outside, touch metal part of door. No shock.
4) Get out of car, stand up.
5) Touch door again. Large shock. Ouch.
What I do now is the following:
1) Stop car, park, remove key.
2) Open door.
3) Reach outside, put hand on door.
4) With hand on metal part of door, get out of car and stand up.
5) Now I can safely take my hand off the door.
(ie, the hand on the metal part of the door grounds me while I stand up, so I can't build up a static charge).
I don't remember having this problem until sometime this past spring. I don't have the problem when it's raining, but otherwise, there's lots of charge.
Anyone else had static to the point where it's painful to get out of the car? I realized how much I've been affected when I was riding in another car and I was afraid to touch the door after I got out. Of course, there was no problem in that car.
Is there anything I can do? Will an anti-cling treatment on my seat help?
I need your help! Thanks,
Matt
