We have a 99 9-3 company car with cloth seats which tends to cause frequent static shocks in the winter. The type of jacket you wear makes a big difference as it slides along the seat while you get in and out. fleece is a deathwish.
I haven't tried it in the car yet, but I have the problem much worse with a chair at our air conditioned computer room. No matter what I wore, I'd get a nasty shock as soon as I touched somethin metal. (touching a grounded equipment rack) My solution to that was to tape a anti-static circuit board bag to the seat of the chair. Yes, that's right. The cheap metallic plastic bag that computer parts like motherboards and cards come in. I taped it to seat of the chair, and I never get shocked anymore. No grounds straps, just a mediocre conductive surface on part of the chair.
This has brought about a theory.
This has led me to believe it's the process of rubbing the seat as you get in and out. If the last part of your seat that is rubbing against your body as you get in and out is conductive, you will not be carring a nasty charge when you get out of the seat. I haven't tried it in the saab yet, but it'd be easy for someone to try.
